The Rhode Island State Court system has a number of different jurisdictional and geographic divisions. All Traffic Violations are handled either at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal or a local city or town Municipal Court. Misdemeanor cases, and initial appearances for felony cases, are handled in the Rhode Island District Court. The District Courts are divided in four divisions. Felony cases are litigated and resolved in the Rhode Island Superior Court, for which there are also four Superior Courts.
