Attorney Phillip Wullschleger learned criminal defense where it is practiced most often and under real pressure — inside the office of the Rhode Island Public Defenders, representing people who had a great deal on the line and could not afford to hire counsel.

As a Rule 9 Student Attorney, he appeared in Rhode Island's District Court under Rule 9 of the Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules, which authorizes supervised law students to practice before the State's courts. He negotiated case resolutions with solicitors and prosecutors and drafted motions and memoranda. After graduating, he continued with the office as a paralegal, concentrating on record clearing — expunging or sealing more than 100 cases for clients in District and Superior Court.

During law school he served as a Summer Clinic Intern in the Veterans Justice Clinic at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School, researching and drafting memoranda on veterans' discharge-upgrade appeals, and as a student attorney in the Immigration Clinic at the University of Massachusetts School of Law.

A second-generation immigrant whose mother grew up in Guatemala, Attorney Wullschleger is conversational in Spanish and able to serve Rhode Island's Spanish-speaking community directly. Before law school he worked in construction and restaurants — experiences that ground his belief that everyone deserves a serious, prepared defense.

At Marin & Murphy, he works alongside the firm's senior trial attorneys to defend clients in DUI cases, domestic violence charges, drug offenses, traffic violations, and expungement petitions — combining his preparation and energy with the oversight of a firm that has defended more than 2,500 DUI cases and set two statewide constitutional precedents.
