What to Expect Here.

Marin & Murphy is built around a small number of attorneys doing substantive criminal defense work. We are not a volume plea-mill. We are not a referral shop. The firm's posture supports doing the work well — real preparation on every case, honest client communication, and the judgment to know when a plea is genuinely the right answer and when it isn't.

The firm provides qualified leads through its established marketing infrastructure. Attorneys handle the cases and contribute to firm marketing — Google reviews, case results, content, and public visibility. The leads come to you; your part is helping build the firm's reputation that makes those leads possible. The time you'd otherwise spend on networking and rainmaking goes to the work.

We are deliberate about hiring. We would rather wait for the right person than fill a seat. If we are talking to you about a role, it is because we think you are specifically a fit — not because we are working through a stack of resumes.

Practice Posture
The Work Is About the Client
Real preparation, real communication, real judgment about what each case actually needs. Some cases plead. Some go to trial. The firm's job is to give attorneys the conditions to make those calls correctly.
Lead Flow
Leads Come to You
The firm's marketing produces qualified inbound consultations. You handle the cases and contribute to firm marketing — reviews, case results, public visibility. Your part isn't filling the pipeline; it's helping build the firm's reputation.
Compensation Philosophy
Salary, Not Commission
Each role pays a real salary in the range disclosed on the posting. Performance expectations are explicit: substantive caseload, client outcomes, and marketing contribution. The firm holds attorneys accountable to these standards.
Marketing Visibility
Active Participation Required
Attorneys at the firm actively contribute to firm content — bylines, video, photography, case writeups, and Google reviews — consistent with bar advertising rules. This is not passive permission to use your face. It's active participation in the work that makes the lead flow possible.

$160K-$190K Salary · East Greenwich or Providence · 8-15 Years Experience
Senior role for an attorney with 8-15 years of substantive criminal defense practice. Practice spans Rhode Island state criminal defense and federal criminal defense in U.S. District Court (firm will fund and sponsor federal admission). Open · April 2026
Associate Attorney — Criminal Defense (Mid-Level)
$115K-$135K Salary · East Greenwich · 2-4 Years Experience
Mid-level associate role for an attorney with 2-4 years of substantive criminal practice and actual criminal prosecution or defense courtroom experience — RI AG, public defender, U.S. Attorney's Office, or substantive private criminal defense. Active partner mentorship; the role develops you toward the senior closer-and-litigator structure. Practice spans Rhode Island state criminal defense and federal criminal defense (firm sponsors and funds federal admission). Open to MA/CT laterals — firm will fund RI reciprocity admission.

The Team.

The firm's Rhode Island criminal defense practice is anchored by founding partner Matthew T. Marin (admitted RI, MA, CT, SC) and partner Stefanie A. Murphy (admitted RI, MA, CT; admitted to U.S. District Courts in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut).

Matt founded the firm in 2008 after early prosecution experience at the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General. He has been recognized by Super Lawyers for 11 consecutive years and named to the National Trial Lawyers Top 100. He successfully challenged Rhode Island's DUI Rights for Motorists form in State v. Zimmerman and originated the suppression argument that became State v. Corcoran, the Rhode Island Supreme Court Miranda precedent.

Stefanie has 14 consecutive Super Lawyers selections (Rising Star 2012-2018, Super Lawyers 2019-2025). She secured a not-guilty murder verdict in State v. Winslow (2023), serves as Editor of A Practical Guide to Trying DUI Cases in Rhode Island (MCLE, 2nd Edition 2024), and serves as Rhode Island affiliate counsel for the ACLU.

Frequently Asked.

Does the firm require attorneys to develop their own book of business?

No. The firm provides qualified leads. You handle the cases and contribute to reviews, case results, content, and public visibility consistent with bar advertising rules. Your part isn't filling the pipeline; it's helping build the firm's reputation that makes those leads possible.

Are MA, CT, or NY-licensed attorneys welcome?

Yes. The firm welcomes lateral inquiries from MA, CT, and NY-licensed attorneys with substantive criminal defense experience. The firm will fund the application for Rhode Island bar admission via reciprocity, and relocation support is available for the right candidate at the senior tier.

What is the firm's compensation philosophy?

Compensation is salary-anchored, not bonus-heavy. Each role lists a salary range based on experience. Performance expectations are explicit: substantive caseload, client outcomes, and marketing contribution. The firm holds attorneys accountable to these standards. The firm does not under-comp senior talent.

What is the long-term opportunity?

Marin & Murphy is a growing firm. Roles are hired as long-term opportunities for sustained performers. The firm has not yet formalized a partnership promotion structure and would rather build that path with the right hire than commit to a fixed timeline. Future partnership consideration is part of the conversation for attorneys who demonstrate sustained performance.

Do the roles include federal criminal defense?

Yes. Both senior and mid-level roles handle Rhode Island state criminal defense and federal criminal defense in U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. The firm will sponsor and fund federal admission for the right hire. Federal practice is mentored by partner Stefanie A. Murphy, who is admitted to the U.S. District Courts for RI, MA, and CT.

Where are the firm's offices?

The firm's Rhode Island offices are located in East Greenwich (firm headquarters), Cranston, Providence, and South Kingstown. The senior associate role offers a choice between East Greenwich and Providence. The mid-level associate role is based at East Greenwich.

How does the firm handle attorney marketing?

Attorneys at the firm appear in firm content — bylines, video, photography — consistent with bar advertising rules. Comfort with this visibility is a requirement of the role. Specific marketing expectations are discussed during the interview process.

I am interested but you do not have my role posted. Should I still reach out?

Yes. The firm hires when it needs to, not on a fixed calendar. Most of the firm's hires happen through direct conversation rather than open postings. If your practice fits Marin & Murphy, email Matt directly. All inquiries are confidential.

Why Attorneys Take the Conversation.

Marin & Murphy is not a startup. The firm has operated continuously since December 2008. The marketing infrastructure that produces qualified leads has been built over 17 years. The 451 five-star Google reviews are the result of sustained client work, not a recent push. Attorneys joining the firm inherit infrastructure, not chaos.

The firm's published work and recognition include the firm partners' selection by Super Lawyers across 25 combined years (Stefanie 14 consecutive, Matt 11 consecutive), Stefanie's editorial role at A Practical Guide to Trying DUI Cases in Rhode Island (MCLE 2nd Edition 2024), Matt's National Trial Lawyers Top 100 selection, and substantial coverage by the Providence Journal and Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly on landmark constitutional cases originated by both partners.

Bar admissions across the partnership: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut (Stefanie); Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, South Carolina (Matt); and U.S. District Courts for Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
